  • Lions Northern Beaches raise $2500 for Heart Kids

It was committed! Four years ago Lions Club of Balgowlah adopted a project to run a barbecue for a fledgling Car and Bike Festival raising funds for Heart Kids Charity. Club President at the time, Bruce McLaren, was approached by the organiser Mr Barney Birel to do all the catering for the day from 6.00 a.m to 3.00 p.m. With help from Frenchs Forest and Pittwater Lions Clubs, and several of Barney's volunteers, Balgowlah organised a successful project, raising over $2,000. Lions Northern Beaches Clubs have done it each year since.

Planning for this year's event was done by a small committee led by Ken Hird, Barbecue Chair. Once again we asked for support from Pittwater and Frenchs Forest, which was forthcoming.

Ken and his team organised the purchase of food and drinks, and went to Pittwater Rugby Park on 27th February to set up.On Sunday 28th February the Lions early morning team arrived at dawn, anticipating serving many bacon and egg rolls and sausage sandwiches to the participants, who were due to arrive with cars and bikes by 7.00 a.m.

Due to rain overnight on the Saturday, many of the participants were loathe to make the trip and get their beautiful cars and bikes wet and muddy. So early sales were slow.

The sun came out and the day was a beauty, so the public still came and we were flat chat from 10.00 a.m. Due to the good organisation by Lion Ken Hird, there were no big queues of people waiting to be served. We sold 160 bottles of water alone, plus other canned drinks.Total takings were $3,895.00. Profit was $2,500. Club Treasurer Leonie Bishop happily sent off the $2,500 cheque for Heart Kids.

Over 140 project hours. A great effort by all concerned.
